For over a century, TAYA has been a fixture in Ginza, a district known for its upscale shopping and dining. The challenge of renovating such a storied establishment fell to Manabu Chiba, who sought to preserve the shop's dignified atmosphere while making it more accessible to younger customers. The result is a space that respects its past while looking firmly to the future.
Chiba's design draws inspiration from two key elements: the shop's long history and the vibrant street life of Ginza. The interior features custom wooden furniture, creating a sense of depth and warmth. Meanwhile, the façade, made of varying degrees of polished stainless steel, reflects the bustling street, establishing a connection with passersby.
The use of stainless steel is a particularly innovative feature of the design. Its expression changes depending on the degree of polish, from mirror-like to a subdued matte. The higher part of the building becomes gradually mirror-like, reflecting the glamorous scenery of Ginza, while the façade at eye level is partly finished with a mirror surface, catching the eye of passersby.
The renovation project, which took place from September 2009 to September 2010, has been recognized for its excellence. In 2017, it was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award. This prestigious accolade is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and inspire positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
Chiba's renovation of TAYA Ginza is a testament to the power of thoughtful design. By respecting the shop's history and embracing the energy of its surroundings, he has created a space that is both familiar and fresh, a fitting tribute to a beloved Ginza institution.
